INDIANAPOLIS -- Charles R. Bantz, chancellor of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, today (April 29) named Daniel C. Smith, the highly regarded associate dean of academics at the IU Kelley School of Business, to serve as interim dean during a far-reaching search for a new leader of one of the country's premier business schools.

Smith, who is professor, the Clare W. Barker Chair in Marketing, and associate dean of academics, will take over the reins of the school when its current leader, Dean Dan R. Dalton, steps down this summer.

Bantz selected Smith following extensive consultation with the Kelley faculty and staff. "Those conversations and comments highlighted the faculty's commitment to excellence, Dean Dalton's accomplishments, the school's collegial culture across two campuses, and the potential for even greater success despite internal and external economic challenges," Bantz said. "The school has accomplished a great deal with Dan Dalton's superb leadership as a scholar-administrator. He is internationally recognized for his research, and he vigorously led his colleagues as an administrator."

Dalton, who has led the Kelley School since 1997, announced earlier this year that he would not seek a reappointment as dean, and that he would return to teaching. He will hold the Harold A. Poling Chair of Strategic Management, a title he also has held since 1998.

The Kelley School of Business offers undergraduate and graduate education programs to approximately 4,600 full-time students on its Bloomington campus and approximately 1,200 students on its Indianapolis campus. The school is named in honor of E.W. "Ed" Kelley, a marketing innovator who received his undergraduate degree from IU in 1939.

Bantz said a plan to begin a national search for a replacement for Dalton will be initiated in May and it is hoped a new dean will join the school by July 2005.

"This will be a national search that will seek out the best business leaders in the world, including those leaders already in the Kelley School of Business," Bantz said.

Smith was a natural choice for interim dean, Bantz noted. "He has had a significant impact on the lives of students and colleagues as a professor, MBA program chair, department chair and associate dean. Dan's quality leadership and the support he received from his colleagues will make for a smooth transition," he said.

After joining the faculty of the Kelley School of Business in 1996, Smith served as chair of the MBA Program from 1998 to 2001. In 2002, he was appointed chair of the marketing department. He also received the Eli Lilly Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award in five of the last six years and the Board of Trustees Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001. In addition, he received a "four-star" rating in the last three issues of Business Week's Guide to Leading Business Schools.

Smith's research focuses on brand strategy and product management and has appeared in the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Strategic Management Journal and others. He has served as a consultant to many industrial and consumer goods companies including 3M, IBM, Alcoa, Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Oscar Mayer, R.J. Reynolds, Mack Truck, Eli Lilly, Samsung and Saab USA.
