Former first lady Judy O'Bannon to address graduates at IU Bloomington
Former Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon will address the 2004 graduating class at IU Bloomington's Assembly Hall on May 8. An IU graduate with a degree in social work, O'Bannon also will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during commencement ceremonies. It was at IU that O'Bannon met her husband, the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon, and the two spent the next 45 plus years as public servants. IU commencement ceremonies set for May 8-14
A total of 15,639 graduates will be eligible for degrees from IU during May commencement ceremonies at eight campuses. IU commencement week will start in Bloomington on May 8 and conclude at IU East on May 14. Nine individuals will receive honorary degrees at five IU campuses. They include philanthropist Ruth Lilly at IUPUI and broadcaster Tavis Smiley at IU Kokomo. Details

Daniel Smith selected as interim dean of IU's Kelley School of Business
IU on Thursday (April 29) announced that Daniel C. Smith, the Clare W. Barker Chair in Marketing and associate dean of academics at the IU Kelley School of Business, will serve as interim dean during a far-reaching search for a new leader of one of the country's premier business schools. Smith will take over the reins of the school when its current leader, Dean Dan R. Dalton, steps down this summer, announced IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz. Full story

UAW President Gettelfinger named 2004 Distinguished Alumnus
United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger will receive the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award from IU Southeast. Gettelfinger will accept the award during IU Southeast's commencement ceremony on May 10. Elected UAW president in 2002, Gettelfinger represents more than 600,000 autoworkers nationwide. Full story

From Galileo's pendulum to the Global Positioning System
As he sat in a church in 1581, 17-year-old Galileo observed a chandelier and came to the realization that time could be measured by the swing of a pendulum. The story of what Galileo's observation meant, and its profound consequences for modern science and technology, are described in a new book, Galileo's Pendulum (Harvard University Press), by IU Bloomington physicist Roger Newton. IU hosts world conference on early humans
Human evolution experts from South Africa, Spain and throughout the United States gathered at IU Bloomington this week for the first annual CRAFT Missing Links Conference. The scientists also made use of the Center for Research into the Anthropological Foundations of Technology's Stone Age Institute. CRAFT is co-directed by IU professors Kathy Schick and Nicholas Toth. Bloomington business, education and government leaders visit Capitol Hill
A group of IU officials and Bloomington community leaders traveled Wednesday (April 28) to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Indiana's congressional delegation and build support for university and local economic development efforts. The annual trip is co-sponsored by the Bloomington Economic Development Corp. and IU, and since 1998, has been part of a larger effort to mobilize the business community as advocates for the IU Bloomington campus and the community. Volunteering: it's a ten-to-one return on investment
Steven Miller is a hard-eyed businessman who knows a good deal when he sees it. That's why he believes so deeply in volunteerism. The former CEO and chairman of the board of Shell Oil Company wants to see virtually every man, woman and child in America become volunteers. A self-confessed optimist, Miller cited several reasons why he believes he is engaged in anything but wishful thinking as he presented the Addison Locke Roache Memorial Lecture recently at IUPUI. Doc Counsilman eulogized
A three-hour memorial service on April 18 for James "Doc" Counsilman, who passed away last January, drew some 400 friends, family, colleagues and former swimmers to the Whittenberger Auditorium at IU Bloomington. Fifteen speakers illuminated different aspects of Doc's life. You can read a eulogy by Doc's friend and colleague Swimming Hall of Fame Coach Cecil Colwin at SwimInfo, the Web site for Swimming World magazine. We also encourage you to visit the home page of the the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming.

Athletics:

PGA champion returns to IU
IU golf's most prized alum, Shaun Micheel, returned to his alma mater last weekend for the first time since winning the 2003 PGA Championship. The Memphis, Tenn., native became a recognized name in the golf world with his sterling PGA victory and the manner in which he pulled out the win. He withstood a late charge by Chad Campbell en route to a final round 70 and the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. Full story

Kappas, Cutters win Little 500 races
Kappa Kappa Gamma narrowly beat a team from Teter Quadrangle in the closest finish in the 17-year history of the women's Little 500 bike race on April 23. In the men's race, the Cutters lived up to the legend of the movie Breaking Away by winning over Alpha Tau Omega in a close and controversial finish. Crimson rallies past Cream in spring football game
The Crimson squad rallied from a 13-point deficit with two second-half touchdown passes from freshman Blake Powers to senior Travis Haney to knock off the Cream squad, 20-19, in the annual Cream and Crimson Spring Game at IU Bloomington. The Hoosiers look ahead to their 2004 season opener against Central Michigan on Sept. 4. The IU Football site offers complete details about the team and how it performed during spring practice.
