Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County celebrates 26th class graduation

2010 Distinguished Alumni Award given to Peg Stice

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County (LBMC), a program in partnership between Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies and the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, recently honored this year's 35 graduates and the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Peg Stice.

IU Professor of Public Affairs and Philanthropic Studies Leslie Lenkowsky was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, held on April 28 at the Fountain Square Mall Ballroom in Bloomington.

LBMC is a seven-month program designed to develop leadership skills and promote community involvement. Participants take part in sessions focusing on specific aspects of community life. In addition, each participant works with a small group of classmates to complete a project related to a specific community concern. This year's projects include a book of local landmarks to improve children's literacy and community awareness, a community vandalism and graffiti study, volunteer coordination for MCCSC Adult Education, Monroe County Photo Expo, and support for Stepping Stones, a nonprofit with services for teens experiencing homelessness.

"I offer heartfelt congratulations to this year's graduates of the Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County program," said Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson. "In this important program, the community becomes the classroom. Through LBMC, students gain essential leadership skills as they apply their knowledge in helping to meet the needs of our community."

The graduates join more than 700 LBMC alumni. "The Class of 2010 has distinguished itself through its hard work and enthusiasm. I look forward to the many successes each of these individuals is bound to achieve," said Mary Catherine Carmichael, LBMC director.

Peg Stice, LBMC Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, was recognized for her outstanding achievements in community service and leadership development. Stice currently mentors students through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs' American Humanics nonprofit management and leadership program and the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation's fundraising minor. She has devoted more than 40 years to education and nonprofit work.
