Search for new IU director of intercollegiate athletics announced

Search committee to be led by IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley

BLOOMINGTON, Ind -- President Adam W. Herbert announced today (May 27) that Indiana University is commencing the search for a new director of intercollegiate athletics for the Bloomington campus and named IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley to lead the search process.

Herbert said that Terry Clapacs, IU's current director of intercollegiate athletics, would continue to head the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics until his successor is identified and begins working later this year.

Herbert also announced the formation of a 16-member search committee, to be chaired by Beckley, which will begin searching for the new athletics director. The committee will begin working immediately and offer its recommendations to the president later this summer.

"Like all other fields of endeavor at IU, we strive for excellence in athletics," Herbert said. "We have before us a unique opportunity to shape the future of IU athletics in a manner that reflects the values and high aspirations of the university. I am confident that Ken and the members of this search committee will work in that spirit as we seek to identify new athletics leadership."

In addition to Beckley, the search committee includes Peter Obremskey, member of the IU Board of Trustees, and senior administration officials Sara McNabb, executive assistant to the president; Charlie Nelms, vice president for institutional development and student affairs; and Judith Palmer, vice president and chief financial officer. It also includes faculty representatives Bruce Jaffee, professor of business economics and public policy; Julia Lamber, professor of law; Dan Maki, professor of mathematics; and James Wimbush, professor of business administration and alumni representatives Gregory Fox and Gerald Miles. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is represented by Jennifer Brinegar, assistant athletic director; Lin Loring, women's tennis coach; Ron Remak, president of the IU National Varsity Club Board; Chris Reynolds, associate athletic director; and Katie Pollom, a senior member of the volleyball team and co-chair of Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Commenting on the charge before him, Beckley stated, "I am honored to lead this important undertaking and look forward to working with my distinguished colleagues in the weeks ahead. In my conversations with the president, we agreed that our process will be comprehensive and one that is focused on bringing the best possible candidate to Bloomington."

Clapacs has managed major dual responsibilities in athletics and administration since replacing former IU athletics director Michael McNeely in the fall of 2002. Clapacs will resume his full-time responsibilities as vice president for administration and chief administrative officer for the university upon the arrival of the new athletics director.

"I am extremely grateful to Terry for his dedication to the university and hard work in leading two major units for such an extended period," Herbert said. "He has provided stability and direction for the athletics department while addressing a wide range of university challenges. His leadership is deeply appreciated."

Prior to announcing the search process, Herbert met with the personnel subcommittee of the University Athletics Committee, coaches and administrators within the athletics department, and others to solicit their counsel.

Herbert also has asked former IU football coach Bill Mallory to assist him in the final due diligence phase of the screening process of final candidates. He will be joined in this effort by Beckley and Jaffee.

Herbert said he hopes to make a final decision on the new athletics director this summer.
