Stargazers will have a unique opportunity to witness a rare astronomical event on the morning of June 8 -- the transit of Venus. A transit is the passage of a planet across the face of the sun. Observatories on the campuses of IU Bloomington (pictured here) and IU Kokomo have made arrangements for safe viewing. The last transit of Venus occurred in 1882. Filmmaker, IU scholar discuss social and political issues of South Africa
Producer, director and documentarian Peter Davis became deeply involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa 20 years ago. He has produced more than 30 full-length documentary films on social and political issues, including South Africa: the White Laager, a history of Afrikaner nationalism; Generations of Resistance, an historic account of African rebellion against white rule up to the student uprising of 1976; and Remember Mandela, which was shown on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta in 1988. During a recent visit to the Bloomington campus, Davis sat down with Patrick O'Meara, IU dean of international programs and a native South African, for a discussion. Listen

Kelley School chosen to host major conference in advance of G8 summit
The Kelley School of Business will host a major international economics conference in Bloomington on June 3-4, in advance of the gathering of the Group of Eight (G8) nations in Sea Island, Ga., the following week. The annual conference attracts highly regarded policy advisers, academics and journalists. Its theme this year will be "Security, Prosperity and Freedom: Why America Needs the G8." The conference is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Details
Guidant Corp. CEO joins Kelley School of Business faculty
Ronald W. Dollens, outgoing president and chief executive officer of Guidant Corp., has been selected as the fifth Harold A. "Red" Poling Chair of Business and Government in IU's Kelley School of Business. Dollens, who has led the Indianapolis-based medical device leader for 10 years, will return to Bloomington as a visiting professor to teach in the same place where he earned a master of business administration degree in marketing in 1972. Cream and Crimson Weekend coming up June 19-20
Cream and Crimson is coming up with the annual alumni barbecue luncheon on Saturday, June 19, and the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Service Award on Sunday, June 20. Five IU alumni will be honored by IU with its Distinguished Alumni Service Award. The honor is IU's highest award that can only be given to an alumna or alumnus. The class of 1954 also will hold its 50th anniversary reunion. We hope you can make it! Details
Listening with her heart
Moved by an appeal that first circulated to IU alumni, Susan Dabkowski answered a request made on behalf of a dying man. The circumstances that led Dabkowski, B.A. '77, to donate one of her healthy kidneys to retired IU Professor Jim Jensen might have looked a lot like chance -- and a slim chance, at that. Read their inspiring story in the current issue of the IU Alumni Magazine, which sadly appeared just before Jensen's death on April 29. Read

Journal showcases comics, art and writing between cultures
When Danit Brown, Esther Lee and Lea-Ann Bigelow took the helm of Indiana Review, a student-edited journal published biannually with support from the Department of English at IU Bloomington, it seemed only natural that they would put together an issue devoted to writing between cultures. "We're all between cultures ourselves," said Brown, who was born and lived part of her life in Israel. "Our parents emigrated from other countries, and so we all had experienced that feeling of not quite belonging to our parents' cultures or to mainstream American culture." Full Story
Athletics:
Search for new IU director of intercollegiate athletics announced
President Adam W. Herbert announced Thursday (May 27) that IU is commencing the search for a new director of intercollegiate athletics and named IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley to lead the search process. Herbert said that Terry Clapacs, IU's current director of intercollegiate athletics, would continue to head the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics until his successor is identified and begins working later this year. Hoosiers Batty and Tran advance in NCAAs, earn All-American honors
IU Bloomington's 25th-ranked women's doubles tandem of senior Linda Tran and sophomore Sarah Batty knocked off the 17th-ranked University of Oklahoma doubles team of Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri in three sets in the second round of the 2004 NCAA doubles championships at the University of Georgia. By reaching the quarterfinals, Batty and Tran have both earned All-American honors in doubles. This is the first time a Hoosier has been selected an All-American in women's doubles since Deborah Edelman and Rachel Epstein advanced to the quarterfinals in 1993. Full story
