Hobart's Eich named Wells Scholar at IU
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Timothy Eich of Hobart, Ind., has been named a Wells Scholar at Indiana University, one of 20 incoming freshmen so honored. He plans to pursue a career in medicine with majors in biochemistry and biology.
The Wells Scholarship, named in honor of Herman B Wells, the late university chancellor and IU president, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university. Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus.
The first Wells Scholar from Hobart High School, Eich was honored with the President's Award for Academic Excellence, the American Legion School Award and the Principal's Award.
Active in Academic Super Bowl competition, he captained the English Team and was a member of the school's Science Team, which placed second in the state his junior year and was named state champion his senior year. He also was a member of his school's Knowledge Master State Championship Team and the Spell Bowl Team, and was named a Duneland Athletic Conference Academic Competition All-Star.
A class officer for two years and a member of Student Council for two years, he served his senior year as president of the National Honor Society, was student council mayor of the school and was president of the Spanish Club. He also was an appellate lawyer and a justice in Youth in Government, a member of the Psychology Club, and the Spanish Club artist. He was treasurer of Key Club his sophomore year and president his junior and senior years.
EIch has volunteered with the local food pantry, the Humane Society and the Kiwanis Club; provided home repair and maintenance to the elderly through the "Christmas in April" project; and served as a mentor with the Boys and Girls Club.
The Wells Scholars program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors. It offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. Wells Scholars are members of the Honors College at IU, where they have the opportunity to apply for grants in support of research, teaching internships, professional experience, creative activity, conference travel and honors thesis work. They are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.
