Provost announces search for vice provost for enrollment management

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 4, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson announced today (Oct. 4) that the campus has initiated a search for the next vice provost for enrollment management.

The vice provost will succeed Roger Thompson, who left the position this summer to become vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Oregon. David Johnson is serving as interim vice provost for enrollment management at IU Bloomington.

Jean Robinson, professor of political science and associate dean for faculty and academic programs in the College of Arts & Sciences, will chair the search committee, which will work with the executive search firm Williams & Co.

"The work of the vice provost for enrollment management is vitally important to the continued success of the Bloomington campus," said Hanson. "The incumbent will help Indiana University recruit, retain, and graduate the best students. He or she will work to build a more diverse student body and to help keep an IU education affordable."

"I am grateful to Jean Robinson for her leadership of this strong and diverse committee," Hanson also said. "I am confident that the committee members will represent IU Bloomington well as they help to identify the next vice provost."

Robinson said: "We are excited about the opportunity to find a leader who will continue and enhance IU Bloomington's recruitment of talented and engaged students. This is a challenging time for colleges and universities, as the demographic shifts combined with the economic downturn and the costs of a college education create a new reality for securing a student body characterized by both high ability and diverse economic, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds.

"The search committee is committed to finding candidates for the vice provost position who exhibit a passion for discovering and enrolling the very best students from a broad range of backgrounds, and who have a demonstrated gift for leading a complex organization. Our extraordinary professional staff in Enrollment Management work in a wide range of functions, and we will look to find an extraordinary leader for them, as well as for the campus."

Other members of the search committee include:

  • Mary Ellen Anderson, director of admissions
  • Matthew Auer, dean, Hutton Honors College
  • Roland Cote, registrar
  • Scott Feickert, College of Arts & Sciences
  • Harold "Pete" Goldsmith, dean of students
  • Valerie Grim, professor of African American and African diaspora studies
  • James Kennedy, Student Enrollment Services
  • Eric Love, Office of Diversity Education
  • Townsend Plant, Jacobs School of Music
  • Bryce Smedley, CWA Local 4730
  • Katherine Tetrick, student
  • Esther Uduehi, student
  • Munirpallam Venkataramanan, Kelley School of Business

The vice provost heads the Office of Enrollment Management, which includes the offices of admissions, enrollment planning/research, first-year experiences, the registrar, scholarships, student financial assistance and systems design and development. It works to attract, admit, enroll and retain students; create and manage a campus schedule, course offerings and academic records; administer scholarships and financial aid; facilitate student transitions; and promote Indiana University and higher education.
