IU Alumni Association to celebrate its 150th birthday Aug. 2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Alumni Association is celebrating the anniversary of its 150-year history of service to the university and its alumni.

On Monday (Aug. 2), IU alumni around the world will be wearing cream and crimson, logging on to the association's Web site at https://www.alumni.indiana.edu to enter a puzzle contest, and attending campus events to take part in the celebration. The actual anniversary is on Aug. 1, but since that falls on a Sunday, IU Alumni Association Day is planned for the following day.

The online puzzle -- Indiana Challenge -- was contributed by New York Times crossword puzzle editor and National Public Radio regular Will Shortz, who received a bachelor of arts degree from IU in 1974. The winner of the contest will receive a $150 gift certificate good toward IU gifts and merchandise from the Alumni Collection at the association's online store.

IU campuses around the state will celebrate on Monday and throughout the month with ice cream socials, a barbecue, a jazz brunch and other activities. Additional events are planned for later in the year.

The Indiana General Assembly, the governor and to date nearly half of Indiana's mayors have signed proclamations recognizing the IU Alumni Association and declaring that Aug. 2 is IU Alumni Association Day.

For the past 150 years, countless alumni volunteers, led by 11 association chief executives, have served IU and its alumni. During that century-and-a-half, the association launched the IU Foundation, IU Varsity Club, IU Sports Network and Hoosiers for Higher Education.

As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving more than 455,000 living graduates worldwide, the IUAA serves as the connection point and conduit between IU alumni and the university. The association has a dues-paying membership organization, but nearly half of the people who benefit from its programs and services each year are non-members.

Following are details about each campus alumni events:
