BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The artwork of fourth and fifth graders from The Project School will be on display at Indiana University's Themester on Sustainability Closing Exposition at Alumni Hall between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.
The elementary school students created the work with the guidance of undergraduate students enrolled in a Collins Living-Learning Center service-learning course titled "Art and Community," taught by Collins Associate Director Yara Clüver. The children worked collaboratively on four individual projects, each related to the future of the planet and its inhabitants.
The finished products are:
- A dome-shaped lamp assembled from recycled plastic Pizza Express cups
- A tree constructed from recycled cans and coat hangers that includes books and other objects made from recycled papers inspired by Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree
- A human figure constructed from sticks, leaves and other elements from nature inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy
- A theatrical performance with original script, music and costumes that examines the dangers of oil spills
"Art and Community" exposed IU students to experiential learning, Clüver said. Course readings on the role of the artist in community, activist art, the teacher-student relationship, art and elitism and civic engagement were enhanced by the hands-on work with the elementary school children. Reciprocally, the hildren benefitted from working through their ideas with college students, she said.
