BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Student Media board has appointed three new editors-in-chief for the Indiana Daily Student newspaper and Arbutus yearbook.

Brooke Lillard, junior from Memphis, Tenn., has been named the editor-in-chief of the summer 2011 Indiana Daily Student. MaryJane Slaby, junior from New Carlisle, Ind., has been chosen to follow Lillard as fall editor-in-chief.

Kayleen Cohen, junior from Bloomington, Ind., has been appointed editor-in-chief of the 2012 Arbutus yearbook.

Lillard has served the IDS in various roles, from health-care beat reporter to copy editor. She says paying attention to detail will help her run a successful summer paper, with its twice-weekly editions and numerous special sections.

"Because we don't print as often as the spring and fall semesters, that means we need to make sure our content is strong and that we sell the paper above the fold with strong headlines, photos and design for every paper we put on the stands," Lillard said.

IU Student Media welcomes students of all majors, and Lillard majors in public affairs and environmental management.

"I'm not a journalism major," she said. "However, I'm still passionate about my work here and about this organization."

Slaby, the fall editor-in-chief, said she is ready to take on her position with full confidence.

"I am prepared to accept challenges that come my way, so the IDS can remain a place to develop and grow as well as have credible and exciting journalism," Slaby said.

Slaby has also served as managing editor, arts editor and cultures reporter. Her goals for the fall include having an on-call reporter to cover breaking news.

"Having a person designated to breaking news at all times would make getting important information out to our readers faster and easier," she said.

Cohen, an English major, has worked for the Arbutus yearbook as a writer, entertainment editor and calendar editor. She is the current managing editor.

"I feel that I have observed the process of production from all available angles," Cohen said. "Holding each of these positions has helped show me ways to restructure management and organization to allow all of the levels of the staff to work more fluidly together."

As editor-in-chief, Cohen says she hopes to create something that both her staff and campus will be proud of.

"In addition to exciting my staff's pride in their publication, I would like to awaken the student body to the presence of the Arbutus," she said.

Published by students for students, the IDS, Inside magazine and Arbutus yearbook are among the nation's most honored collegiate publications, consistently winning top national honors. Student editors are in charge of publications content, with editorial independence granted by the IU Board of Trustees.

The publications and their sites comprise IU Student Media, a self-supporting IU auxiliary in historic Ernie Pyle Hall with the IU School of Journalism. The IDS was first published in 1867 and became a daily in 1899. It now publishes 15,000 copies per day, with an online readership of more than 230,000 visitors.
