IU Athletics set for second green spring football game

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The annual Cream & Crimson spring football game, to be played at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 16) at Memorial Stadium, will mark the first anniversary of the launch of the Indiana University Athletic Department's Greening Cream and Crimson game-day initiatives.
"We look to improve on the solid foundation we built over the last year as part of the Greening Cream and Crimson initiative. And, as always, we're excited to be a key player in attaining the many sustainability-related objectives of Indiana University," said Chris Reynolds, senior associate athletic director.
The success of this 'green' athletic event, like others before it at IU, hinges greatly on the help of the Cream & Crimson Green Team, a group of student volunteers who will be assisting with the many initiatives taking place on game day. These initiatives include:
- Recycling during tailgating. Volunteers will circulate the tailgate area, distributing bags (clear for recycling, black for trash) and educating and encouraging fans to recycle.
- Recycling inside Memorial Stadium. Volunteers will co-locate trash and recycling bins in the stadium, educate and encourage fans to recycle, and supervise recycling efforts.
- Vendor waste reduction. Volunteers will help supervise recycling to reduce contamination of cardboard and paper.
- Eco Cell phone collection. Volunteers will supervise the collection of cell phones for recycling during the game. Recycled phones reduce the destruction of gorilla habitat, and proceeds from the Eco Cell phone collection will benefit campus sustainability efforts at IU.
- Bike valet. Volunteers will valet bicycles on the west concourse of Memorial Stadium, encouraging alternate modes of transportation to athletic events
"The rookie season for the Greening Cream and Crimson initiative laid a solid foundation for continued success," said Bill Brown, director of the IU Office of Sustainability. "We are delighted with the leadership Fred Glass, Chris Reynolds, and the entire staff at IU Athletics have demonstrated in leading Indiana University and, ultimately, the Big Ten to a more sustainable future."
