Margaret Watanabe's biography

July 21, 2011

Margaret "Peg" Watanabe, M.D., Ph.D., clinical assistant professor emerita for the IU School of Medicine, has been elected to the Indiana University Foundation Board of Directors.

"Peg and her late husband, Gus [Dr. August M. Watanabe], have a long history of serving and supporting the Foundation, the School of Medicine, and the Herron School of Art and Design," said Foundation President Gene Tempel. "As a strong proponent of medicine and the arts at IUPUI, she is a significant addition to our board."

Watanabe has held several positions at the IU School of Medicine, including a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Rheumatology, a research assistantship in the Department of Microbiology, and a residency and later a clinical assistant professorship in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

After earning a B.S. in Zoology from Wheaton College in Illinois, she went on to earn an M.S., a Ph.D. in Microbiology, and an M.D. from the IU School of Medicine.

Watanabe and her late husband, Dr. August M. Watanabe, have been longtime supporters of the IU Herron School of Art and Design and named the Eleanor Prest Reese Gallery in memory of her mother. The Watanabes have also funded the August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research at the IU School of Medicine. In recognition of their support, the Watanabes received IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Awards in 1996 and 2004.

Watanabe currently serves on the IUPUI IMPACT Campaign Council, the Herron School of Art and Design Dean's Advisory Board, and the American Pianists Association Board of Directors. She is a member of the IU School of Medicine's J.O. Ritchey Society and the IU Foundation's Arbutus Society, Well House Society and Presidents Circle.
