Former Kelley Dean honored for his many contributions to management research

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Dan Dalton, dean emeritus of Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, was honored Monday (Aug. 15) for his contributions to management research.
The Distinguished Career Award was presented to Dalton at the Academy of Management's annual meeting in San Antonio. The award recognizes Dalton's advancement of research methods and the impact he's had in the field of management, inside the classroom and out.
"There is no higher honor than to be recognized by your peers," said Dalton, who also is the Harold A. Poling Chair of Strategic Management and the founding director of the Institute for Corporate Governance at the Kelley School. "Ours is a society of colleagues and mentors whose work instructs and inspires us. It is in that spirit that my work may have modestly contributed to that tradition."
Dalton is internationally recognized as a leader in management research and is a fellow of the Academy of Management.
Dalton was dean of the Kelley School of Business from 1997 to 2004, elevating all of Kelley's major programs to Top 20 positions during his tenure and expanding the business school in terms of endowed chairs and programs as well as overseeing the addition of the Godfrey Graduate and Executive Education Center.
Kelley School Dean Dan Smith said the intellectual environment at Kelley is "far richer" because of Dalton.
"He is truly one of the most gifted management scholars in the world," said Smith. "He is one of those rare professors who has advanced management thought, practice and the methods we use to study organizational behavior."
In addition to management research, Dalton's interests include corporate governance and strategic leadership. He earned his doctorate at the University of California at Irvine and his bachelor's degree and master of business administration degree at California State University at Long Beach.
The Academy of Management is a professional association for scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations. Founded in 1936 by two professors, the Academy of Management is the oldest and largest scholarly management association in the world, with more than 19,000 members from 109 nations.
