Thai ambassador to visit Indiana University
Will discuss tsunami's impact during lecture
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Thailand's ambassador to the United States will visit Indiana University on Wednesday and Thursday (March 2-3) and will present a public lecture on Wednesday at IU Bloomington, "U.S.-Thai Relations: Elections, Trade, Tsunami." The lecture is free and open to the public.
Kasit Piromya will speak at 5 p.m. in the Moot Court Room (Room 123) of the IU School of Law-Bloomington, located at 211 S. Indiana Ave. He will meet with students from IU's Thai Student Association afterwards. His visit is being coordinated by the IU Office of International Programs.
His visit to the state also will include meetings with state officials and with deans and professors at IU Bloomington and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
Thousands of people in Thailand's coastal resort areas were among the victims of a tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004. Former U.S. presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton recently visited Thailand's Phuket and Phang Nga provinces to view the devastation and relief efforts which followed the tsunami.
A highly decorated diplomat, Piromya has served as his nation's U.S. ambassador since 2004. He previously has been Thailand's ambassador to Japan, Germany, Indonesia, the former Soviet Union, the Russian Federation, Mongolia and Papua New Guinea. He also has held several other positions within the Thai government.
Piromya is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, the Institute of Social Studies at the Hague in the Netherlands, and the National Defense College of Thailand.
