IU Bloomington Continuing Studies celebrates 40 years of Lifelong Learning programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 8, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies is celebrating its 40th anniversary this fall with a new Lifelong Learning catalog and free events for the public, including "flash" classes being held in public locations the week of Sept. 12.

Lifelong Learning Cover

Under the visionary leadership of founding director Jim Hertling, the first "Noncredit Course Catalog," consisting of 10 classes, was offered in fall 1971; the first Mini University was held in June 1972; the General Studies degree program was approved by Indiana's Commission on Higher Education in 1975; and Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County joined the mix in 1984.

Forty years, tens of thousands of students and many awards later, BCS continues to make the resources of IU Bloomington available to adults for purposes of degree completion, lifelong learning, leadership development and career enhancement.

"Since its inception four decades ago, Bloomington Continuing Studies has done an outstanding job of making such opportunities available through a variety of enjoyable, interesting and informative offerings," said IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson. "The success of Bloomington Continuing Studies over 40 years is a tribute to the skill and passion of all who have been involved in its programs. I offer heartfelt congratulations to all who have contributed to the success of Bloomington Continuing Studies and its many programs."

Courses such as "The Kennedys: An American Political Dynasty," "Major Collegiate Athletics in the 21st Century," "The Arc of 20th Century Photography" and certificates in Web design and event planning will be offered this fall.

Special 40th anniversary activities will include free "flash" classes held in public locations during the week of Sept. 12: "Elements of Design: Texture," "Beer Appreciation: A Starter Course" and "Six Easy Tips to Improve Your Digital Photography." IU Bloomington Continuing Studies will also participate in the City of Bloomington's annual Lifelong Learning Week, which will be celebrated Sept. 11-17.
