Oct. 18, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Maurer School of Law announced today that it will conduct a mini-symposium on the constitutionality of federal health-care legislation in honor of a revered longtime professor and scholar.
Titled "The Constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act," the mini-symposium honors Patrick L. Baude, Ralph F. Fuchs Professor of Law Emeritus, who died in January. A constitutional law scholar, Baude was one of the most popular and highly respected professors at the Maurer School of Law, serving with distinction for more than 40 years. The symposium will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the law school's Moot Court Room.
James F. Fitzpatrick, senior partner of the Washington, D.C., firm Arnold & Porter and a 1959 graduate of the law school, will speak in favor of the constitutionality of the Act. Thomas M. Fisher, solicitor general of the State of Indiana and a 1994 graduate of the school, will take the opposing view.
Lauren K. Robel, dean and Val Nolan Professor of Law; Daniel Conkle, Robert H. McKinney Professor of Law and Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies; and Dawn Johnsen, Walter W. Foskett Professor of Law, will provide commentary and moderate a question-and-answer session with the audience. Washington, D.C., attorney Stephen M. Trattner, a 1970 graduate, is sponsoring the symposium and will make introductory remarks.
A reception will follow the symposium in the law school's faculty lounge. The event is free and open to the public.
