IU Bloomington included in 'green colleges' guide

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 19, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Princeton Review has selected Indiana University Bloomington for inclusion in the third annual edition of its free downloadable book "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition."

Released April 17, the guide profiles the selected colleges and universities and provides facts, statistics and write-ups reporting on the schools' environmentally related policies, practices and academic offerings. The free guide can be downloaded at www.princetonreview.com/green-guide and www.centerforgreenschools.org/greenguide.

"College-bound students are increasingly interested in sustainability issues," said Robert Franek, senior vice president/publisher of the Princeton Review. "Among 7,445 college applicants who participated in our 2012 'College Hopes & Worries Survey,' nearly seven out of 10 told us that having information about a school's commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the school."

Princeton Review's description of IU Bloomington begins, "Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus in the Indiana University system, is establishing itself as a flagship university in the world of sustainability."

"I'm pleased to see our administration, faculty, staff and student leaders receive recognition for their tireless efforts to make IU Bloomington a more sustainable campus," said IU Director of Sustainability Bill Brown. "We are just getting started and we have a long way to go, but it is great to be recognized for excellence along the way."

The Princeton Review chose the 322 schools based on a 2011 survey of 768 institutions across the U.S. and in Canada to tally its annual "Green Rating" scores (scaled from 60 to 99) of colleges for its school profiles in its college guidebooks and website. The 322 schools in this guide received scores of 83 or above in that assessment.

Although this is the first year IU Bloomington has been included in the guide, it received a score of 96. Schools that receive the maximum score of 99 are included in the "Green Honor Roll," which this year comprises 16 schools ranging from small liberal arts colleges to large research institutions.

Created by The Princeton Review in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council, "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges" says it is the only free, comprehensive guidebook profiling institutions of higher education that demonstrate a notable commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. The guide does not rank the schools according to their Green Rating scores, nor does it include those scores in this book's school profiles.
