Indiana University receives 2012 CIO 100 award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 1, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IDG's CIO magazine has honored Indiana University as a recipient of the 2012 CIO 100 award. The 25th annual award recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify operational and strategic excellence in information technology.

The CIO 100 commends IU's innovative eTexts initiative, which saves students money on the costs of digital textbooks and online course materials. Brad Wheeler, IU's vice president for information technology and CIO, led a new model of partnerships with leading publishers and Indiana-based Courseload.com, and the model is now being piloted and expanded at other institutions.

"For 25 years now, the CIO 100 awards have honored the innovative use of technology to deliver genuine business value," said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of CIO magazine and events. "Our 2012 winners are an outstanding example of the transformative power of IT to drive everything from revenue growth to competitive advantage."

IU's eTexts model is transforming the way students obtain and use their digital course materials. The initiative enables faculty to choose digital textbooks and online exercises at discounted prices for students. Using Courseload software, students can read, annotate and collaborate with the materials on a variety of tablets, laptops and smartphones. IU's eText deals are available on all IU campuses.

"It's a true honor for IU to again be among the distinguished group of organizations named to the CIO 100 award this year," Wheeler said. "IU has long and valuable partnerships with leading companies that save students money, and our eText model extends that win-win opportunity to an area of great concern for students and parents."

IU was named to the CIO 100 in 2009 for its collaborative model of software development with dozens of university partners.

About the IU eTexts initiative

IU piloted the eTexts initiative in 2009, with full deployment in spring 2012. From the beginning, the program has worked to drive down the costs of course materials while giving students and faculty access to high-quality educational resources. In fact, IU now has deals in place with six of the largest textbook publishers to make content electronically available to students at significantly reduced prices. About the CIO 100

The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. First, companies filled out an online application form detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives. Next, a team of judges reviewed the applications, looking for unique practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100. Complete coverage of the 2012 CIO 100 awards will appear in the Aug. 1 issue of CIO magazine and online at cio.com on Aug. 1.
