Winner of a Grammy Award and two Tony Awards, "American Idiot" is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post-9/11 world. Through incredible spectacle, thrilling performances and the hope embodied by a new generation, "American Idiot" has given Broadway audiences the time of their lives night after night since its year run on Broadway at the St. James Theatre and its subsequent national tour, which launched December 2011 in Toronto.

"What makes 'American Idiot' so incredible is that it combines the thrill of a fully staged production with the pulse-pounding audio and visual experience of a live rock concert," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "Whether or not you are familiar with Green Day's original album, 'American Idiot's' tale of friendship, young love and trying to make sense of the world we live in has something everyone can relate to. This show is emotionally charged and electrifying from beginning to end -- it is definitely not to be missed."

The musical features the hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Holiday" and the blockbuster title track "American Idiot" from Green Day's 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album. Also included in the score are several songs from Green Day's 2009 release "21st Century Breakdown" and an unreleased love song, "When It's Time."

The show features direction by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening"); choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett ("Black Watch"); music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal"); Tony Award-winning set design by Christine Jones; and Tony Award-winning lighting design by Kevin Adams.

IU Cinema will screen "Broadway Idiot," which follows Armstrong from a Madison Square Garden concert to the Broadway opening of "American Idiot," at 3 p.m. Sept. 4. Director Doug Hamilton is expected to introduce and discuss his film. The screening is free but ticketed. IU Cinema tickets are available at the IU Auditorium box office, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; one hour prior to any screening at the cinema; or online.

IU Auditorium and IU Residential Programs and Services will partner to present "RPS Night" for the Sept. 4 performance of "American Idiot," which will include exclusive pre- and post-show events for RPS residents. Interested students can contact their resident assistant for more information.
