Filmmaker Walter Salles' lecture will follow sneak preview of 'On the Road' at IU Cinema

Nov. 5, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Relive Sal Paradise's iconic road trip alongside his free-spirited, fearless, fast-talking buddy Dean Moriarty when IU Cinema hosts a sneak preview of filmmaker Walter Salles' latest work based on Jack Kerouac's famous novel, "On the Road."
The film will screen at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at IU Cinema. Salles, who is scheduled to be present for the sneak preview, will also deliver a Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the cinema.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1956, Salles spent his childhood in France and the United States before returning to Brazil as a teenager. He cemented his reputation as a director in 1998 with "Central Station," which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
"The highly anticipated film adaptation of 'On the Road' was put into the hands of director Walter Salles in 2007 by Frances Ford Coppola, who has owned the rights for more than 30 years," IU Cinema director Jon Vickers said. "Salles had already successfully embraced the 'road movie' genre with the three films that we are presenting in this series -- the genre that he claims drove him to directing."
Kerouac and Salles have another connection to Indiana University: Lilly Library special collections conservator James Canary. He is conservator for the scroll on which Kerouac wrote "On the Road," which is owned by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. Canary travels with the scroll whenever the piece of literary history goes out on exhibit, and he spent time with Salles in Paris earlier this year while there for an exhibition held in conjunction with the "On the Road" premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Additional films being screened at IU Cinema are in Portuguese and Spanish languages with English subtitles:
- 7 p.m. Nov. 15, "The Motorcycle Diaries." Follow 23-year-old Ernesto "Che" Guevara and a friend as they take a life-changing trip across Latin America on a beat-up motorcycle.
- 9:30 p.m. Nov. 16, "Foreign Land." The lives of Paco and his mother, and of Miguel and his girlfriend, Alex, intersect in Lisbon before the foursome embarks on a road trip to Spain.
- 7 p.m. Nov. 17, "Central Station." A former school teacher who writes letters for illiterate people passing through Rio de Janeiro's main train station sees her life change when she helps a 9-year-old boy search for his father.
Salles is also scheduled to be present for the screening of "The Motorcycle Diaries."
His lecture is free, while the screening of "On the Road" is free but ticketed. Tickets for the remaining three films are $3 each and can be obtained at the IU Auditorium Box Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or one hour before any screening at the cinema. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 812-855-1103 for a $10 service fee.
The "Walter Salles: Leaving Home" film series is sponsored by Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Latino Studies Program, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Department of Communication and Culture and IU Cinema, with special thanks to Canary, IFC Films and Darlene Sadlier.
