Halstead to serve as director of IU online education

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 16, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Judith Halstead has been named director of the Indiana University Office of Online Education, Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs John Applegate has announced.

Halstead, who has served as associate director of the Office of Online Education since last November, is a professor in the community and health systems department at the IU School of Nursing. Barbara Bichelmeyer, now serving as interim chancellor at IU Southeast, will remain with the online office as senior director.

Halstead has more than 30 years of experience in higher education with expertise in online education and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Since 2004, she has served as professor and most recently as executive associate dean for academic affairs at the IU School of Nursing. She was director of Instructional Services and Resources for the University of Southern Indiana School of Nursing and Health Professions from 1994 to 2004. She also held appointments in the IU School of Nursing from 1987 to 1994, and was recognized for her service contributions to the IUPUI campus with the Glenn Irwin Experience Excellence Award in 1994.

"Judy has been a key part of the establishment and growth of the Office of Online Education," Applegate said. "We look forward to taking advantage of her extensive experience in an expanded leadership role."

As one of the first educators in the state of Indiana to develop online degree programs in nursing and the health professions, she has been a national leader and consultant in online education in nursing since the late 1990s. She most recently led the development of the online RN-BSN degree consortium across all IU campuses. Halstead has received more than $5.6 million in educational and program grants. Her work in promoting excellence in nursing education, including the use of active learning strategies in online learning, has been disseminated nationally and internationally in more than 100 presentations, five books and 50 publications. She is co-editor of the award-winning book on nursing education, "Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty," now in its fourth edition.

"I am so pleased Judy has agreed to take on greater leadership responsibilities in the OOE," Bichelmeyer said. "She has extensive experience and a wealth of knowledge with intercampus online programming that will be invaluable to us as we all work to reach our goals for online education at IU."

Halstead is the recipient of numerous regional, national and international teaching awards in recognition of her leadership in advancing excellence in education. She is a fellow in both the National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education and the American Academy of Nursing, and is currently president of the National League for Nursing, the premier national nursing organization focused on promoting quality in nursing education.

"It is an exciting time to be involved in online education at Indiana University," Halstead said. "I look forward to continuing to provide leadership to these efforts and working with faculty and staff across all of our campuses to implement online programs with the quality for which Indiana University is nationally and internationally recognized."

The Indiana University Office of Online Education is charged with providing leadership, management and coordination of online education across all Indiana University campuses.
