Hoosiers for Higher Education to visit Statehouse

Hoosiers for Higher Education (HHE) will hold its annual visit to the Indiana Statehouse on Wednesday (Feb. 20).

HHE is a statewide organization of more than 11,000 alumni, students, parents and friends of Indiana University dedicated to promoting higher education in Indiana. As part of its efforts, the group gathers in Indianapolis annually to thank elected officials for their support of colleges and universities and to discuss issues affecting higher education. Organizers expect about 400 HHE members and IU students will take part in the event.

"Now that budget and tax restructuring issues, which could directly affect higher education, are at the top of the legislative agenda, this is a particularly important time for us to make our voices heard," said Kirk White, director of HHE.

Members will attend a welcome and legislative briefing at the Radisson Hotel City Centre, 31 W. Ohio St., Meridian East Ballroom at 10:30 a.m. White, IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley and Don Weaver, director of state relations for IU, will be among those welcoming the HHE members.

Members will go to the Statehouse to meet with legislators and then return for a noon luncheon. IU Trustee Steve Ferguson will address the gathering. The executive vice president of Cook Group Inc., Ferguson is chairperson of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, a founding member of the Alliance for Indiana's Future and a former member of the Indiana General Assembly.

At the luncheon, two legislators will receive the Welsh-Bowen Distinguished Public Official Award in recognition of their support for higher education.

HHE members will then return to the Statehouse to continue their legislative visits. HHE staff will be available through the afternoon in Room 401B at the Statehouse to answer questions.
