State Science Olympiad at IU on March 23

Indiana University Bloomington will host the Indiana Science Olympiad State Tournament on March 23. Forty-eight high school and middle school teams of young scientists will compete for a chance to represent the state of Indiana at the National Science Olympiad Tournament at the University of Delaware in May.

The tournament will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day's events will conclude with an awards ceremony at the IU Auditorium at 5 p.m.

IU faculty, research scientists, students and staff, along with scientists and volunteers from the Bloomington community, will coordinate and judge 36 science and engineering events.

IU's science faculty and students will write and coordinate the chemistry, biology, physics, kinesiology, astronomy and mathematics events. Community volunteers from Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, the Indiana Army National Guard and the City of Bloomington will write and coordinate the engineering, rocketry, mapping and aerodynamics events.

Competitors will travel with their coaches and parents to IU Bloomington from all over the state, including Carmel, New Albany, Michigan City, Kokomo, Valparaiso, Vincennes, Winamac and many communities in between. The Bloomington schools competing in the tournament include Jackson Creek Middle School, Batchelor Middle School, Fairview Elementary School, Bloomington High School North and Bloomington High School South.

The Indiana Science Olympiad Tournament is underwritten by the IU College of Arts and Sciences, the IU School of Education, Indiana Science Olympiad and D.J. Angus Scientech of Indianapolis. Other donors include Eli Lilly and Co., Mays Chemical Co., IU K-9/Bloomington Amateur Radio Clubs, the IU Office of Communications and Marketing, and Bloomington Hospital Community Relations.
