Doctoral hooding returns to Commencement
All Ph.D. and other doctoral candidates who expect to receive their degrees at Commencement on May 4 in Assembly Hall will also receive their doctoral hoods during those ceremonies.
This marks a change from plans announced earlier to hold a separate University Graduate School hooding ceremony on May 3. The separate hooding ceremony has been cancelled this year. Several schools traditionally hold recognition ceremonies, some of which include hooding. These will continue as planned. A complete schedule is available at https://www.indiana.edu/~ceremony.
"In planning a separate hooding ceremony for the graduates of the University Graduate School, we wanted to honor in a special way the dedication and extraordinary effort that are required to earn a doctoral degree," said IU President Myles Brand. The president noted, however, that a number of factors delayed the announcement of the new ceremony. As a result, many families had already made travel plans that could not be changed.
Beginning this year, Commencement will be moved inside to Assembly Hall and will be split into two ceremonies to accommodate the many schools and large audience.
The morning Commencement ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on May 4. It will include graduates from the Kelley School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the School of Law, the School of Music, and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Also participating in the morning ceremony will be Ph.D. candidates in these schools who are receiving degrees from the University Graduate School.
The afternoon Commencement ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will include graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Continuing Studies, the School of Informatics, the School of Journalism, the Division of Labor Studies, the School of Library and Information Science, and the School of Optometry. Ph.D. candidates in these schools who are receiving degrees from the University Graduate School, as well as all master's degree candidates receiving degrees through the University Graduate School, will also participate in this ceremony.
