World-renowned music school to celebrate the beginning of a new era

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will celebrate the official moment at which the IU School of Music takes on its new identity as the Jacobs School of Music with a "Naming Concert" on Friday (Feb. 24) at 4 p.m. in Auer Hall on the Bloomington campus.
Following remarks by IU President Adam W. Herbert, Jacobs School of Music Dean Gwyn Richards and David H. Jacobs Jr., son of donors Barbara B. and David H. Jacobs, the public concert will feature a brass ensemble, the Pro Arte Singers and a chamber trio, with musicians representing students, faculty and alumni.
Auer Hall will be the site of a "Naming Concert" for the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music on Friday (Feb. 24) at 4 p.m.
The naming concert follows the announcement on Nov. 17, 2005, of the largest single gift for a school of music at a public university and, at the time, the largest single gift ever given by individuals to IU. The $40.6 million gift qualifies for matching funds set aside by IU for the purpose of supporting endowed scholarships, fellowships and faculty positions, which will effectively double the annual distribution of income earned on the gift in these areas.
Dean Gwyn Richards said that "alongside the continued support of the Friends of Music, the Dean's Circle, our alumni and patrons, this extraordinary gift will grow and create a more certain future for our school. In an instant, Barbara and David Jacobs have made it possible for us to consider more deeply our role in the future of music performance, research and education around the world."
Celebration activities at the IU Jacobs School of Music on Friday (Feb. 24) will include an opening reception for ArtsWeek and the world premiere of the opera "Our Town" by American composer Ned Rorem.
Celebration activities in the Jacobs School on Friday (Feb. 24) will extend throughout the afternoon and evening with the opening public reception of the annual ArtsWeek in the Musical Arts Center lobby at 5 p.m. and the world premiere of the opera Our Town by American composer Ned Rorem at 8 p.m. in the Musical Arts Center auditorium.
Additional festivities throughout the weekend in the IU Jacobs School of Music will include pre-opera talks by the composer, librettist, stage director and designer; masterclasses; concerts; films; and four exhibitions of material related to the opera.
