David Zaret named interim dean of IU College of Arts and Sciences

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Board of Trustees today (May 5) confirmed the appointment of David Zaret as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. His appointment begins on May 8.
Zaret replaces Kumble R. Subbaswamy, who is stepping aside as dean. Subbaswamy will retain his appointment as professor of physics until June 30, at which time he will leave IU to become provost of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
A professor in the IU Department of Sociology with an adjunct appointment in the Department of History, Zaret served as the executive associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences from 1999 to 2005. He received a D.Phil. degree from the University of Oxford in 1977 and joined the IU faculty the same year.
Zaret's research interests are in historical sociology, social theory and the sociology of culture. His current work looks at petitions from antiquity to current times with an aim of explaining how public opinion became an important part of politics.
Three finalists for the position of dean of the IU College of Arts and Sciences were announced Wednesday. Zaret will remain in the interim position until a permanent dean is announced and in place.
