Media Advisory

2002 Commencement at IU Bloomington

EDITORS: Dick Enberg will give the commencement address at Indiana University Bloomington on Saturday (May 4) during its 173rd commencement exercises. IU will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on the IU alumnus and broadcaster during the ceremonies at IU's Assembly Hall.

In a change from previous years, commencement is being moved inside this spring and divided into two ceremonies. You are welcome to cover either the morning session, which will begin at 10 a.m., or the afternoon session, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. We ask that you arrive and set up 30 minutes in advance of each ceremony because of the formality of the occasion.

Arrangements have been made for media to use a raised platform at the back of the student section (at the north end of the Assembly Hall floor), where a mult-box will be located to provide audio. Media representatives attending commencement should enter Assembly Hall through the north entrance. Ample parking should be available along the west drive.

IU will professionally videotape the ceremony and will deliver the highlights via fiber optic line to WFYI-Channel 20. Television stations can contact WFYI and pick up videotape copies beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Contact the station at 317-633-7410 (master control/24 hours) to make other arrangements to receive the video.

The university also will audio-record the entire ceremony and will present it on the Web at https://broadcast.iu.edu shortly afterward. RealPlayer will be needed to listen to the ceremony.

Enberg will be available for interviews on Friday (May 3) from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Office of the IU Board of Trustees, located on the mezzanine floor of the Indiana Memorial Union. Limited arrangements also will be available for telephone interviews.

More details about Enberg and the commencement ceremony are available at IU's Media Relations Web site, https://newsinfo.iu.edu. If you have any questions or wish to set up a telephone interview with Enberg, contact James Tinney, managing editor for media relations, at 812-855-8773 or jltinney@indiana.edu, or George Vlahakis, manager of media relations, at 812-855-0846, 888-514-3889 (pager) or gvlahaki@indiana.
