The Lutheran Foundation Announces $1 Million Gift to IU School of Medicine-Fort Wayne

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 2, 2006

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Lutheran Foundation and Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne have announced the establishment of The Lutheran Foundation Endowed Senior Professorship of Cardiovascular Research.

Made possible by a $1 million gift from The Lutheran Foundation, the professorship will focus primarily on research and will be the first such endowed professorship at IUSM's Fort Wayne program.

"This gift will provide lasting recognition of The Lutheran Foundation as a partner with our state's medical school," said Lutheran Foundation Executive Director Marcia Haaff. "It exemplifies our mission of promoting good health throughout the community."

In 2002, The Lutheran Foundation provided IUSM-Fort Wayne with $2 million for much-needed equipment and supplies.

"The Lutheran Foundation is leading by example -- again -- as the first area foundation to endow a faculty position at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne. This gift supports IUSM-Fort Wayne's objectives as an integral component of IU's broader Life Sciences Strategic Plan," said D. Craig Brater, dean of the IU School of Medicine and vice president for life sciences. "This commitment reflects the long and generous support of the Fort Wayne community in its partnership with the School of Medicine--we simply could not hope to accomplish our shared goals without such meaningful partnerships."

The announcement was made in a joint event held in the school's library. It was attended by representatives from IPFW, The Lutheran Foundation and the Fort Wayne medical community.

The Lutheran Foundation was established in 1996 after the sale of The Lutheran Hospital. Since then, The Lutheran Foundation has awarded more than $86 million through Regular, Partnership and Emergency Grants to congregations or non-profit organizations within its 10-county service area.

IUSM-Fort Wayne seeks to enrich Northeastern Indiana by providing an environment that fosters innovative research, personalized and clinically relevant medical education, and life-long learning by faculty, staff and students.
