“Discoveries, Inventions and Rediscoveries” conference brings 19th-century France to life

Photography, Darwin, gas lighting and zoos were some of the major influences shaping life and culture in 19th century France. A three-day colloquium sponsored by the Indiana University Department of French and Italian will explore these and other topics through more than 200 presentations taking place October 19-21 at the IU Memorial Union.
Sessions devoted to "sexology," food and wine, fashion and "the Fantastic" are on the agenda, along with presentations concerning American attitudes toward France and French conceptions of American Indians. Faculty from universities in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, France, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will join presenters from IU and other American universities for the event.
