The Web site for the 2006 National Science Olympiad, designed by the IU Office of Creative Services, earned a W3 award in the inaugural year of competition.

Additionally, the Web design group in the Office of Creative Services has won two W3 Web awards in a separate competition.

Mini University, an annual vacation college co-sponsored by the IU Alumni Association and IU Bloomington Continuing Studies, has won two CASE V awards -- a gold medal for Best Collaborative Program and a bronze medal for Best Practices in Alumni Relations.

Mini University is a weeklong learning vacation held each June on the Bloomington campus. Participants choose from more than 100 offerings to attend up to 15 non-credit mini-courses taught by many of IU's finest faculty members. The program celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2006 with a record attendance of over 450.

"Mini University sets the standard for university-related learning vacations," said Ken Beckley, the IUAA's president and chief executive officer. "We are proud of our long-time co-sponsorship with Bloomington Continuing Studies. It's a special joy each June to see our alumni 'students' back in the classroom."

IU Home Pages, the university's faculty and staff newspaper for all eight campuses, also has won a gold medal in the Best Tabloid/Newsletter for Internal Audience category. Its photographer, Chris Meyer, has won two honors: a gold medal for Best Photo Series: Candid; and a silver medal for Best Individual Photo: Candid.

W3 awards are sanctioned by the International Academy of Visual Arts in recognition of "the power of Web creativity." The competition, which recieved over 2,300 entries in its first year, is open to advertising agencies, public relations firms, interactive agencies, in-house creative professionals, Web designers and enthusiasts and graphic designers. Two IU Web sites in the science category have been singled out, with a gold award going to "Indiana University Life Sciences" and a silver to the "2006 National Science Olympiad."

Ten other CASE V awards will recognize creative writing and design efforts by various IU offices.

The Office of Creative Services has won gold medals for its Creative Services Postcards, entered in the Excellence in Print Advertising category; for "10 Ways IU is Red Hot" in the Excellence in Design: Brochures category; and for the Lilly Library "Places of the Imagination and Imaginary Languages" in the Excellence in Design: Miscellaneous category.

Creative Services also has won silver medals for the Hutton Honors College Viewbook in the Best Viewbook category; for its orientation calendar in the Best Orientation Calendar category; and for 2006 National Science Olympiad in the Best Web Site, Individual Page or Section category. The office has won a bronze medal for the School of Fine Arts Newsletter entered in the Best Tabloid/Newsletter for External Audience category.

The Office of Marketing and the Office of Creative Services has won a silver medal for its "IU is Red Hot" campaign, which was entered in the Teresa DuBois Exline Best Practices in Communications and Marketing, 10,000 FTE and up category.

In addition to the awards for IU Home Pages, the Office of University Communications has won a bronze medal for its newly launched subscription newsletters "Active for Life" and "Live at IU," which were entered in the Best Electronic Newsletter category.

Finally, the magazine Research and Creative Activity has won honorable mention in the category of Best Specialized or Unit Level Magazine. It is published by the Office of Research and Development.

The CASE V region includes colleges and universities throughout the Midwest. Its 462 member institutions include all the universities of the Big Ten conference and several Indiana colleges and universities.
