New Arts Administration degree offered to IU undergrads

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A new Bachelor of Science in Arts Management degree will be available through Indiana University beginning the fall semester of this year. The program is one of only a handful nationwide that prepares students for administrative roles in the arts.
IU's program is unique in offering a balance of visual arts as well as performing arts management courses, said Susan Sandberg, program coordinator.
"I don't know of any other programs that empasize both performing and visual arts -- usually it is one or the other," she said.
Arts Administration Program Director Charles Bonser said the degree is a good choice for artists who are also interested in developing business skills.
"The program is designed for the student who wishes to focus on the management of the visual or performing arts, while also working on the further development of his or her skills as an artist. We think young professionals with this combination of talents are greatly needed in the arts industry, and we hope to make a significant impact with this new program," he said.
Students in the program will take courses in general management and planning, operations, fundraising and development, marketing, public relations, education, community outreach, human resource management, financial management and government relations.
The degree will be offered through the Arts Administration Program, part of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Sandberg said the program will have higher eligibility requirements than the general criteria for SPEA.
The program represents a collaborative effort through many departments, Bonser said.
"We are grateful for the support of the music, theater and fine arts programs, as well as the leadership of the College of Arts and Sciences on the Bloomington campus, in the development of this exciting new program," he said.
