BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Vivek Chandrasekhar of Kokomo, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

A National Merit Finalist and Hoosier Boys State delegate, Chandrasekhar is the first Wells Scholar from Taylor High School, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class.

Chandrasekhar was one of two delegates from Indiana to the U.S. Senate Youth Program Conference and was named a Purdue Junior Scholar in Mathematics. He also captained his Academic Super Bowl team for three years. He was an active participant in Student Council, serving as class treasurer for three years. He anchored his school's television show, WTHS.

He was a four-year member of the varsity track team, as well as a three-year member of the varsity cross country team. He was a member of jazz band and a member and officer of the science club, the Spanish club, and Future Business Leaders of America. Chandrasekhar intends to explore several subjects before deciding on a major.

Hometown information: Vivek Chandrasekhar is the son of Venkataraman and Kausalya Chandrasekhar, Kokomo, Ind.
