BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Vlad Simianu of Carmel, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

A scholar athlete and Academic-All-State member, Simianu graduated from Carmel High School, where he also was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. He was a four-year member of Duke University's Talent Identification Program and he attended the National Student Leadership Conference.

In addition, he placed in the American French Teachers Association Contest for three consecutive years and was the recipient of a Richmond University Book Award.

An accomplished pianist, Simianu won a scholarship from the Indianapolis Piano Teachers Association. He has been recognized by the IU High School Journalism Media Merit-thon, winning third place in the advanced newspaper design category. He also participated in the Franklin Journalism Leadership Workshop as sports editor and in the Ball State Journalism Workshop as editor-in-chief. He was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team and a four-year member of Indianapolis United Soccer Club.

He tutored math and volunteered at Carmel Rehab and at IU Health & Fitness Center for Weight Management. He has been selected to participate in the IU Science, Technology, and Research Scholars (STARS) Program and plans to major in biochemistry and microbiology.

Hometown information: Vlad Simianu is the son of Valerian and Mihaela Simianu, 796 Arrowwood Dr., Carmel, Ind.
