BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Claire Tramm of Wilmette, Ill., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

A National Merit Finalist and scholar athlete, Tramm graduated from New Trier High School, where she earned additional distinction as an Illinois State Scholar and as a member of the Chicago Fire's Illinois All-State Academic Team.

She was a three-year member of the New Trier Township Committee on Youth and a founding board member of Pulse, a teen advocacy group. She also participated in Model United Nations and was a four-year member of her class Steering Committee.

Tramm was a four-year member of the varsity soccer team and a four-year member of the Trevian Soccer Club, for which she served as co-captain her senior year. As a member of the Trevian Soccer Club, Claire traveled to Europe in the summer of 2000 to compete in various soccer tournaments. She also contributed to ESPN.com's High School Sports Page on behalf of the Trevian Soccer Club.

She was a member of choir-opera and participated in several festivals, revues, and musicals, including "My Favorite Year," in which she played the lead role. She was a member of her church youth group, Action, as well as the service organizations Interact, Out-of-the-Box Club and Safe Rides.

Tramm plans to follow a pre-med course while studying cognitive science and business.

Hometown information: Claire Tramm is the daughter of Tom and Bernadette Tramm, 518 Washington St., Wilmette, Ill.
