Indiana high school students to attend NSLC State Leadership Workshop

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On July 6 high school students from around the state of Indiana will convene at Indiana University Bloomington to attend specialized workshops and classes designed by the National Student Leadership Conference to develop the skills that define a leader.
Throughout the event, participants will plan a statewide community service project that focuses on tangible leadership skills. They also will attend a rotation of five leadership workshops that aim to make the students stronger leaders and identify their roles within their community. This year's workshops include:
- Leadership styles and group dynamics
- Public speaking
- Active listening and giving feedback
- Peer mediation and negotiations
- Team building and motivation
- Goal setting
- Project management and networking
- Time and stress management
- Conflict resolution
"We're happy to host the National Student Leadership Conference on our campus this summer," said Kevin Knerr, director, Indiana University Conferences. "IU Bloomington has a strong commitment to providing summer educational opportunities for high school students, and we're pleased to add another program to our broad range of offerings."
With the help of the NSLC, student groups have gone on to produce original and successful community service projects within their states. A bill was written and introduced to the California State Congress, for example, on the educational landscape, providing their suggestions on curriculum improvements. Also, a group of Florida students developed and currently maintain a message board identifying community service projects occurring throughout the state.
"Students develop a sense of independence and responsibility," said Paul M. Lisnek, the NSLC director of academics and former assistant dean of Loyola University Chicago School of Law. "They leave with a true feeling of accomplishment and confidence in their ability to handle the challenges that lie ahead."
The NSLC nominates high-achieving high school students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and demonstrate leadership roles in their extra-curricular activities. The program costs $995.00, which includes room/board and all the activities for the program. The NSLC is entering its 18th year, continuing with a mission to identify and recognize outstanding young leaders from around the world, and provide them with a unique learning environment that encourages not only academic achievement, but also diversity, cooperation and social responsibility. The State Leadership Workshops have been running for the past two years. The workshops began in only three states, but since 2005, have quickly grown to 18 leadership-based workshops, representing 24 states around the country.
Since 1989 tens of thousands of outstanding high school students from across the United States and around the world have come to the NSLC to create a plan for success by experiencing college life, developing essential leadership skills, and exploring a future career hands-on through exciting simulations, exclusive site visits and interactive meetings with renowned leaders in some of today's most sought after professions.
