IU Bloomington to award the first 9-11 Scholarships on Wednesday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington on Wednesday (Sept. 11) will recognize three women who are the first recipients of new scholarships that memorialize IU's victims of last year's terrorist attacks. They will be honored at a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. at Showalter Fountain near the IU Auditorium.
Receiving the $1,500 scholarships will be Jean Marie Buckel, a senior from Indianapolis, Ind.; Angie Marie Hornbach, a senior from Batesville, Ind.; and Irene Raquel Menchara, a sophomore from Griffith, Ind.
The IU Student Foundation raised more than $100,000 to establish the scholarships through proceeds from its Little 500 bicycle race activities and through private gifts. The exact number of members of the IU family directly affected by the events of Sept. 11 remains uncertain.
IUSF and the Indiana Daily Student will be collecting additional donations for the scholarship fund at four campus locations on Sept. 11.
Criteria for the new scholarships were established by three IU students who lost their fathers in the attacks on the World Trade Center. They are Joshua Goldflam, a May graduate from Melville, N.Y.; Rachel Jacobson, a junior from New York, N.Y.; and Jessica Moskal, a junior from Brecksville, Ohio. Jacobson and Moskal helped select the scholarship recipients and will participate in Wednesday's ceremony.
Jean Marie Buckel
Buckel is majoring in sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. While at IU, she has received the American Council of Jewish Women Academic Scholarship, the Kappa Kappa Kappa Academic Scholarship and the Janet Frazee Hayes Scholarship.
She received the Honors College Teaching Internship and the Honors College Professional Experience grants and won the Residence Hall Community Leader Award. In addition to student government, Buckel has participated in several campus and community public service projects, including the Interracial Communications Project and serving as a basketball coach in the Bannecker Community Center's youth basketball league.
Angie Marie Hornbach
Hornbach is majoring in business administration. Other honors she has received at IU include being a member of the Kelley School of Business Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta. She has been honored for academic excellence at Founders Day ceremonies every year she has been at IU.
Her activities have included assisting Professor Thomas Heslin with research and editing of the 2003 revision of his textbook for his course, Introduction to Business. She was an active participant in the Kelley School's E-Enterprise Institute and has served as a vice president in student government and in her social fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. She studied business abroad at the University of Maastricht in the summer of 2001.
Irene Raquel Menchara
Menchara is majoring in business. Other honors she has received include the Lulac National Honors Award, the National Dean's List, the FASE Outstanding Academic Achievement Award and the Inroads Praxair Scholar Award.
Her activities include participation in IU's FASE Mentoring Program, the Minority Achievers Program and the Minority Achievers Mentoring Program. She has been a peer tutor in finite mathematics and calculus, a children's assistant for the English as a local Second Language Program, and a member of the Black Student Union and Latino Unidos at IU.
Details on the Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony
The remembrance ceremony will be only one of many campus and community events that will be held on Sept. 11 in conjunction with the anniversary. Among those events will be a School of Education Web-cast panel discussion from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., chaired by Dean Gerardo Gonzalez, on the implications of 9-11 for education; and a student-led discussion on world issues after 9-11 to be held at 7 p.m. at the Neal Marshall Center. A candlelight march from places around the community will converge at Dunn Meadow at 8 p.m.
Classes will be held as scheduled on Sept. 11. Faculty members are being encouraged to accommodate students who wish to participate in the 4 p.m. ceremony and to incorporate discussions and activities related to the anniversary into their classrooms that day.

Students will accept additional donations for the 9-11 Scholarship Fund at the following locations: near the lobby of the Indiana Memorial Union, outside Ballantine Hall, at the intersection of Fee Lane and 10th Street, and at the IU Stadium Express Bus Stop.
