Education Secretary Rod Paige to speak at IU on Thursday

Rod Paige, U.S. secretary of education, will speak at the Indiana University School of Education on Thursday (Sept. 19) at 4:30 p.m. CDT in the Wright Education Building Auditorium on the Bloomington campus.

Paige, who holds two graduate degrees from the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, will participate in an education forum with IU education students, faculty, administrators and invited guests, including IU President Myles Brand and School of Education Dean Gerardo Gonzalez. Paige's topic will be how schools of education can ensure that no child is left behind in our public schools.

The No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law last January by President Bush as his education reform plan. It provides stronger accountability for results, increased flexibility, local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis on effective teaching methods.

Paige was named to the nation's top education post by President Bush in January 2000. He was formerly superintendent of schools in Houston for six years, and his background in education includes 10 years as dean of the Texas Southern University College of Education. Earlier in his career he coached at the collegiate level. He received a master's degree in physical education from IU in 1962 and a doctorate in physical education from IU in 1970.

Paige's comments will be Webcast live at https://video.indiana.edu:8080/ramgen/encoder/vic/soe_edsec_20020919.rm and archived at https://video.indiana.edu:8080/ramgen/vic/soe_edsec_20020919.rm.
