Outdoor Day planned for campus, community at IU's Bradford Woods

The second annual "IU Outdoor Day" is scheduled for Oct. 5 to acquaint the campus community, families and other area residents with the variety of outdoor educational and recreational activities available at Indiana University's Bradford Woods Outdoor Center near Martinsville.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event will be free to all those attending, and it will include both outdoor adventure and family fun. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. The event is being presented by Bradford Woods, the IU Department of Recreation and Park Administration, and IU Outdoor Adventures.

The sponsor is The Edwin B. and Lucy Cline Memorial Fund. Edwin Cline was director of the Boy Scout Camp Bradford for 20 years, and the couple were outdoor enthusiasts. The fund was created by their three daughters to support Bradford Woods programs.

Among the adventure activities scheduled with professional instruction are canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, hiking, a climbing tower, a ropes course and environmental education. Activities planned for the family include cane pole fishing, crafts, games, face painting, a scavenger hunt and a hay ride to a pumpkin patch.

"Outdoor recreation is very popular today," explained Doug Knapp, coordinator of outdoor recreation and resource management at the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, "and we hope the campus community and area residents -- especially families -- will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about Bradford Woods as one of the finest outdoor recreation sites in the country."

Bradford Woods is a 2,500-acre outdoor center that has provided recreational, educational and leadership development opportunities to youth and adults for more than 50 years. It is located in the forested Indiana hills about 40 minutes northwest of the Bloomington campus.
