IU Applied Health Science Department receives national honor
The Department of Applied Health Science in Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation has been honored for excellence by Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health education honorary society.
The IU department received the 2002 National Honor Award from the society "in grateful recognition of outstanding accomplishments in health education." It is the highest honor the society presents.
David Gallahue, dean of HPER, and Mohammad Torabi, department chair, received the award on behalf of the department at the society's annual conference in North Carolina last weekend. Previous winners include the American Cancer Society and American Lung Association.
The award said the department "has been instrumental in its contributions to and support of health education and Eta Sigma Gamma through its academic preparation programs, research endeavors and service activities." Specifically mentioned was the department's serving for more than 10 years as headquarters for The Health Education Monograph Series of the society, with Torabi as the editor.
Eta Sigma Gamma was founded in 1967 "to elevate the standards, ideals, competence and ethics of professionally trained men and women in and for the health science discipline." The society includes more than 80 chapters and 2,000 members.
The IU Department of Applied Health Science includes seven graduate programs and eight undergraduate programs that emphasize the importance of education in the prevention of personal, occupational and family problems related to lifestyle and health behavior. The doctoral program was recently ranked first in the nation, and the Master of Public Health program is among the top 12 in the country. The department has been a leader in research and service contributions in such areas as drug abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS, and health and safety studies.
