"Show your true colors" is theme for IU's cream and crimson Homecoming

Indiana University alumni will show their true colors as they celebrate Homecoming 2002 on Oct. 18 and 19.

Festivities will begin on Oct. 18 with the 44th annual Homecoming Parade. First-year Head Football Coach Gerry DiNardo will serve as grand marshal. The parade will form on Rose Avenue next to Willkie Quad, between Third and Seventh streets, and begin at 5:30 p.m. Turning west onto Third Street, it will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at the Sample Gates.

A pep rally will follow at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Sample Gates, at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues. Coach DiNardo will be joined by the IU team captains, the RedSteppers, the cheerleaders and the pom squad, and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for the Oct. 19 game, when the Hoosier football team will square off against the University of Iowa at 11:10 a.m. in Memorial Stadium. Fireworks in Dunn Meadow will follow the pep rally.

During pre-game and halftime ceremonies Saturday, the 2002 Homecoming king and queen will be introduced and winners of the float and window-painting contests will be announced. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae RedSteppers will perform, and 50-year I-Men will be honored.

Tickets for the game can be purchased through the IU Athletics Ticket Office. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 812-855-4006 or 866-IUSPORTS.

Alumni and friends also are invited to the 15th annual Homecoming Brunch on Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the John Mellencamp Pavilion next to Memorial Stadium. Entertainment will be provided. Tickets for the brunch -- $12 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under -- are available by calling the IU Alumni Association at 812-855-4822 or 800- 824-3044. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Also on Oct. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m., there will be an open house for all alumni and friends of IU at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 E. 17th St., across from Assembly Hall. Refreshments will be provided.

During the weekend, the classes of 1962 and 1977 will celebrate their 40th and 25th reunions with a variety of events.

The IU Auditorium will offer the annual Homecoming Show on both nights. Blast II: Shockwave is a spectacular production that continues the legacy of Tony-winning Blast! Tickets are available by calling the IU Auditorium at 812- 855-1103.

Student groups will get into the Homecoming spirit at the Yell Like Hell spirit competition on Oct. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union.

Yell Like Hell, sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jump-start on showing their spirit for Homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts such as skits, dance routines, musical numbers and lip-syncing. The act with the most Homecoming spirit will be declared the winner. Three special acts will join the student groups to add to the excitement: the popular a cappella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First and the nationally recognized IU pom squad. Admission is free and the general public is invited to watch. For more information on Yell Like Hell, contact the Student Alumni Association at 812-855-SAA1.

The Indiana University Alumni Association serves the university and its more than 440,000 living graduates through programs, services and communications.
