IU to award inaugural Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis Scholarship

Erin McGonigal, an Indiana University student from Indianapolis, will be honored as the first recipient of the Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis Scholarship at a reception Friday (Oct. 25) at IU Bloomington.

The scholarship honors Gros Louis' remarkable service to IU as a professor, dean and chancellor of the Bloomington campus. The scholarship with established at the time of his retirement in 2001. The scholarship reception will begin at 3 p.m. in the University Club of the Indiana Memorial Union.

McGonigal is a senior in fine arts, with minors in business and psychology. The daughter of Joe and Denise McGonigal, she is an Honors Division student and has been on the dean's list -- with a grade point average of 3.5 or better (out of 4.0) -- every semester at IU. She is on the IU Student Foundation Steering Committee, is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta national sorority, and serves as a first-grade faith formation teacher at St. Paul's Catholic Center in Bloomington.

Beginning Friday at 8 p.m., she will dance for 36 hours in the IU Dance Marathon, which raises money for Riley Hospital for Children. McGonigal also works as a lifeguard at the Student Recreational Sports Center to help pay for tuition. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in graphic design in the advertising profession.

The Gros Louis Scholarship will be awarded annually. Gros Louis served as IU Bloomington chancellor from 1980 to 2001. The scholarship is in the amount of $5,000 and is awarded to an IU Bloomington student for use during their senior year at IU Bloomington. Criteria for selection include demonstrated academic excellence, leadership in student activities, and a distinguished record of service as a good university citizen.
