IU faculty receive $433 million in grant money for 2006-07

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University faculty in the 2006-07 fiscal year received $433 million in sponsored awards to support their research and service activities.
The total, announced today (Sept. 21) by President Michael A. McRobbie, represents the second highest yearly amount in the university's history and an increase of 2.9 percent over the prior fiscal year total of $421 million.
"This is a very impressive achievement by our faculty at a time when competition has greatly increased for funding from both the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation," McRobbie said.
McRobbie noted that the chances of an applicant actually receiving a grant from either of these two federal agencies have steadily dropped in recent years from about one in three to one in five. This is partly due to the growing number of applications for these grants and relatively stagnant levels of funding provided to these agencies by Congress.
Indiana University's NIH awards for fiscal year 2007 totaled just over $140 million, a decrease of over $25 million from the prior fiscal year. Total federal award dollars fell from roughly $235 million in fiscal year 2006 to $211 million in '07.
A $40 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to support the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy helped to diminish the impact on IU's total grant awards caused by the decrease of federal award dollars.
