IU professor to attend White House Chanukah reception

Professor Alvin Rosenfeld, director of the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University Bloomington, has been invited by President and Laura Bush to a Chanukah reception at the White House on Dec. 4.

Last spring, Rosenfeld, a noted Holocaust scholar, author and lecturer, was named by President Bush to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Rosenfeld will serve until 2007 on the council that oversees the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, America's national institution for the documentation, study and interpretation of Holocaust history. Since its opening in April 1993, the museum has welcomed more than 18.5 million visitors.

"I am honored and thrilled to be among the president's guests at this reception," said Rosenfeld, who founded the IU Jewish Studies Program 30 years ago. "This invitation attests to the high profile our program has nationwide and can only help us further our terrific reputation."

The Borns Jewish Studies Program at IU is one of the nation's largest and most distinguished Jewish Studies programs. Last year the program included nearly 2,000 students enrolled in 49 courses, a record enrollment. Rosenfeld, also a professor of English, has been affiliated with the U.S. Holocaust Council as a special adviser to the chairman and a member of the Academic Committee. He has written several books, articles and essays on the Holocaust and American Jewish culture.

The Chanukah holiday begins Nov. 29 and ends Dec. 7.
