IU educator receives national honor for higher education research
Edward St. John, a professor of higher education at Indiana University School of Education and director of the Indiana Education Policy Center, has been selected for a prestigious nationwide award.
St. John recently received the Leadership Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education for "outstanding leadership in advancing the study of higher education." Previous winners have included former U.S. Secretary of Education Ernest Boyer, former Harvard University President Derek Bok and leading economist and former Princeton University President William Bowen.
St. John's leadership in policy research spans more than 20 years. He has received more than $4 million in grants and contracts since 1986 and has published five books and nearly 70 journal articles. He received extensive publicity last May as the principal author of a report that said the U.S. Department of Education has overlooked the role of finances when analyzing the causes of disparity in college access.
The leadership award recognizes those who bring visibility and support to higher education by demonstrating the contributions of the study of higher education to policy formation.
St. John joined the IU faculty in 1998. Previously, he was a faculty member at the University of Dayton, visiting fellow at the University of New England in Australia, a consultant for the U.S. Department of Education and associate director for research and planning for the Missouri Department of Higher Education.
