BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Many life science companies are opting to outsource many functions previously done in-house, including research, development, refrigerated storage and a myriad of manufacturing functions. This shift and its impact on Indiana firms will be the focus of the third program in the 2007-08 Indiana Life Sciences Collaboration Conference Series.

The workshop series is the result of collaboration between Indiana University and a number of key life sciences organizations. Established in 2006, it is led by IU's Kelley School of Business to assist Indiana's healthcare and life science companies. The seminar, "Biotech Discovery and Development Services -- Follow the $$$," is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1, at 8 a.m. in the Embassy Suites Hotel, 110 W. Washington St.. in downtown Indianapolis. The registration fee is $40.

This conference is sponsored by Baker & Daniels LLP and BioCrossroads.

"Indiana is uniquely positioned to support the commercialization of biotechnology products to companies located in biotechnology discovery clusters due to our university and corporate stakeholders, our region's logistics infrastructure, and our FDA-literate workforce," said Larry Davidson, IU professor of business economics and public policy and liaison to the Kelley School of Business' Healthcare & Life Sciences Initiative.

"We'll consider how we are building on what we already have, how resources are being utilized and what we are doing to work with other regional life science clusters," he added.

The last conference in the series will be "Life Sciences is a Capital Idea," May 16, also in Indianapolis.

Registration is available online at www.kelley.iu.edu/lifesc/conferences/confreg.html or by contacting Roxie Glaze at the Kelley School at 812-855-9210 or rglaze@indiana.edu.

The Feb. 1 program will begin with remarks from David Johnson, president and chief executive officer of BioCrossroads, and Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School.

They will be followed by the keynote address, "The Future of Biopharma R&D," presented by Dr. Steven M. Paul, executive vice president for science and technology and president of Lilly Research Laboratories, both at Eli Lilly and Co.

He will be followed by a panel discussion, "How Are Companies Fitting into the Model?" The panel will be moderated by Dan Boeglin, a partner at Baker & Daniels LLP. Panelists will be Jerry Arthur, president of Cook Pharmica; Dr. Alfonso J. Alanis, chairman and CEO, Anaclim LLC; Dr. F. John Mills, CEO, BioStorage Technologies; and Alisa Wright, founder and CEO of BioConvergence LLC.

A second panel discussion will follow lunch, "What are the Gaps and Challenges?" Moderated by Pat Cross, leader of the Health and Life Sciences Practice at Baker & Daniels LLP, it also will feature Dr. Michael Hanbury, CEO of DCL Laboratories; Claire DeSelle, CEO, CS-Keys; Fritz French, CEO of Marcadia Biotech; and David Johnson.

In addition to organizing the workshop series, the Kelley School operates a Web site at www.kelley.iu.edu/lifesc that includes research studies by Kelley faculty, MBA students and industry professionals about various segments of life science industries and the challenges presented.
