IUB launches fundraising effort to promote diversity in the arts

'One for Diversity Fund' designed to create a supportive environment for multicultural artistic expression

The creation of an artistically rich, inclusive community at Indiana University Bloomington is the goal of a new fundraising campaign, the One for Diversity Fund, announced by Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm during opening festivities for the campus' annual Arts Week celebration.

During her remarks at the Henry Radford School of Fine Arts Auditorium today (Jan. 24), Brehm said the university has set a goal of raising $500,000 over the next three years to enhance the diversity of campus arts offerings, strengthen the university's commitment to multicultural artists and enlarge the sphere of artistic expression for under-represented groups on campus.

"This is ambitious," said Brehm. "It will be hard to reach, but I believe it is within our power not only to meet it, but to exceed it."

The One for Diversity Fund was established to assist in the acquisition of art concerned with racial and ethnic representation and to commission works of art from established and promising artists from under-represented backgrounds. It will also be used to support artistic expression by visiting artists from under-represented backgrounds through artistic presentations and to foster the creation of student art from under-represented groups.

Brehm said the campus plans to build the One for Diversity Fund "contribution by contribution, as individuals and organizations join in this effort and demonstrate their support for diversity in the arts." Additionally, she said it was her hope that the fund, which will be managed by the Indiana University Foundation, will receive support from students, university employees and individuals from the city and surrounding counties who enjoy the artistic resources of the campus.
