IU hosts fifth annual cybersecurity summit for higher ed, non-profits

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 1, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University's Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) will host the Indiana Higher Education Cybersecurity Summit Thursday through Friday (April 3-4) at the University Place Conference Center, 850 W. Michigan Street, on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.

The summit -- presented with support from Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame, and Indiana State University -- brings together information assurance professionals from Indiana's leading universities and colleges, and other public institutions to share best practices, research, trends, and innovations in information assurance. The program includes presentations on legal, policy, and audit issues, as well as several short presentations on practical security solutions. The summit is open to information assurance professionals in the higher education, law enforcement, legal, and non-profit fields; advance registration and confirmation is required to attend.

Mark Bruhn

"It is clear that sharing war stories, best practices, and trends in cybersecurity among our campuses helps each institution to improve its own defenses and to minimize the impact of security events. This summit facilitates that sharing," said Mark S. Bruhn, IU associate vice president for Information and Infrastructure Assurance, who also serves as associate director of the CACR. "Of course, that also means the collective higher education community is more secure, which in turn adds to the security of our national infrastructure."

This year's speakers include Fred H. Cate, Indiana University; Matt Light, Indiana Deputy Attorney General; Lisa Berry-Tayman, Baker & Daniels LLP; Stephen Jones, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; Special Agent Robert Herzog, FBI Indianapolis; Gabriel Iovino, Indiana University; Marianne Chitwood, Indiana University; Brett Davis and Addam Schroll, Purdue University; and Jonny Sweeny, Indiana University.

Fred H. Cate's featured presentation, "Privacy and Security in Higher Education," will provide insight into how colleges and universities handle the exceptional volume and variety of personal information as well as how to address the information policy challenges facing colleges and universities, and finally Cate will provide practical steps for overcoming the challenges.

Matt Light's featured presentation, "Indiana Data Protection and Disclosure Laws: Experiences to Date," will discuss Indiana's data protection and breach notification laws, when and to whom they apply, what they require, and penalties for noncompliance. He will also discuss his experiences to date in investigating reported and discovered breaches and administering the statutes in the public and private sector contexts. Light's presentation will include examples of reported incidents and campus responses to the incidents. Finally, he will talk about recent changes to data protection and disclosure laws, including House Enrolled Act 1197 that was signed into law recently, and some other legislative enhancements that could be considered in the future.

Founded in 2002, the CACR, which is co-located at IU's Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, works to enhance the security and integrity of information systems, technologies, and content, while drawing on the university's wide range of scholarly and operational expertise in computer science, informatics, information systems, criminal justice, law, organizational behavior, and public policy. Its major research initiatives focus on real-world problems such as phishing, identity theft, and terrorism, and its scholars and practitioners advise industry, government, and academic leaders in their efforts to thwart computer hackers.
