9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. -- Educating the Growing English Language Learner Population in Indiana
This panel will examine the issues surrounding the growing population of students who are learning to master English while also navigating the school system. Featured panelists are Annela Teemant, Associate Professor of Second/Foreign Language Education at the IU School of Education at IUPUI and Faridah Pawan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Language Education at the IU School of Education, Bloomington.
10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. -- Looking at the 21st Century Scholar Program
Learn more about Indiana's 21st Century Scholar Program, designed to help low-income families send children to college. Joshua Smith, assistant professor of educational psychology and director of the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education in the IU School of Education at IUPUI, and Rob Toutkoushian, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the IU School of Education in Bloomington, will give this talk providing details on their research. Both are involved in separate studies examining the program's success and factors surrounding student success in the 21st Century Scholar Program.

11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. -- Getting Started and Staying on Track at Indiana's Community College
Don Hossler, professor of educational leadership and policy studies at the IU School of Education in Bloomington, and director of Indiana Project on Academic Success (IPAS) has, through IPAS, just completed a variety of studies related to student persistence at Ivy Tech Community College campuses throughout the state. Recent research results provide insight into new student orientation at the Richmond campus and how well "mobile" students perform in northwest Indiana.

1:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. -- Welcome from Pat Rogan, Executive Associate Dean, IU School of Education at IUPUI
1:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. -- BONG HITS 4 JESUS and Beyond: Recent Student Expression Litigation
Martha McCarthy, Chancellor's Professor and department chair for educational leadership and policy studies at the IU School of Education in Bloomington, will offer her views on the impact of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on student speech involving a student holding the "Bong Hits" banner. McCarthy will also discuss other court findings dealing with the First Amendment.
2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. -- School Issues facing the Indiana General Assembly
Terry Spradlin, associate director of education policy at The Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at IU Bloomington, will examine education issues facing the Indiana General Assembly during its next session. He will discuss the impact of property taxes on school budgets, school consolidation, virtual charters and more.
