BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Increasing global opportunities for Indiana's life science companies will be the focus of the opening seminar in the 2008-09 Indiana Life Sciences Collaboration Conference Series in Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 26.

Several key executives at Indiana companies, including Eli Lilly & Co., Zimmer and Cook Group Inc., and North Carolina-based CoLucid Pharmaceuticals, will share insights based on first-hand knowledge of the challenges faced in taking products and services abroad. They will joined by experienced legal advisors at Baker & Daniels LLP, Commissioning Agents Inc., Deloitte Consulting LLP and Safis Solutions LLP.

The conference will help attendees identify and evaluate the growth opportunities presented to U.S. life sciences companies by global markets and to understand the legal, regulatory and business issues that affect life sciences companies' ability to access these global markets successfully.

"It is no surprise that life sciences companies are becoming more global. As they reach out around the world for customers, suppliers, and to meet their needs for research and development, these companies face new and daunting challenges. Conference participants will benefit from hearing about these challenges from experts on the global firing line," said Larry Davidson, director of the Center for the Business of Life Sciences (CBLS) in Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.

The seminar, "Global Life Sciences," will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indianapolis Marriott, 350 W. Maryland St. The program has applied for CLE credit.

This conference is sponsored by Baker & Daniels LLP, Deloitte Consulting and Zimmer. The series financial sponsors include BioCrossroads, Baker & Daniels, Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, Covidien Imaging Solutions, Gilson & Lione, Cook Medical, Deloitte Consulting LLP, Lilly, Ice Miller LLP, the Indiana Economic Development Corp., IU, the IU School of Law--Bloomington, the IU School of Medicine, Purdue and Zimmer. For a complete list of all sponsors, see https://www.kelley.indiana.edu/cbls/conferences/confsponsors.html. It is the ninth in a series that began in the fall of 2006.

Registration is available online at www.kelley.indiana.edu/cbls/conferences/confreg.html or by contacting Roxie Glaze at the Kelley School at 812-855-9210 or rglaze@indiana.edu. The registration fee is $50 for each conference or $180 for the entire series.

Other events in the series and their themes are "Intellectual Property," Nov. 14 at Cook Medical World Headquarters in Bloomington; "Business Partnerships," Feb. 13 at Eli Lilly Headquarters in Indianapolis; and "Strategic Collaborations," May 14 at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Pat Cross, leader of the Healthcare and Life Sciences Practice at Baker & Daniels, will kick off the Sept. 26 conference and introduce a panel that will discuss clinical trials overseas. Dan Carmichael, counsel at Baker & Daniels, will moderate a panel consisting of Suzanne O'Shea, also of counsel at Baker & Daniels; Gretchen Bowker, director of regulatory affairs services and compliance services at Safis Solutions; and Nadia Rupniak, vice president of research and development at CoLucid Pharmaceuticals.

David Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Biocrossroads, will introduce the keynote speaker, Darren Carroll, senior managing director of Lilly Ventures, who will discuss "The Global Regulatory and Business Landscape."

Two panel discussions will follow lunch. Dina Yin, an attorney with Baker & Daniels, will moderate a session, "Selling Products Overseas." It also will feature Chris Cerone, vice president of governmental affairs at Zimmer; Lucy Rose, national managing director for life science regulatory and capital markets at Deloitte; and Pete Yonkman, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Cook Medical.

Rose also will moderate the day's final session, "Manufacturing Compliance and Quality Issues and Opportunities for Outsourcing." She will be joined by Robert E. Chew, vice president of Commissioning Agents Inc.; Divakar Ramakrishnan, executive director of manufacturing science and technology at Eli Lilly; and Veda Walcott, director of quality at Cook Pharmica.

In addition to organizing the workshop series, the CBLS operates a Web site at www.kelley.iu.edu/cbls that includes research studies by Kelley faculty, MBA students and industry professionals about various segments of life science industries and the challenges presented.
