Students' guide to sustainable living released this week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 27, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This week, the Indiana University Task Force on Campus Sustainability is releasing the Indiana Sustainable Student, a guide to sustainable living practices for students that features a range of issues, from water and energy conservation to alternative transportation and sustainable food.

The guide will be available to students at each of the residence halls at Indiana University Bloomington and in many academic buildings, as well as on the Sustainability Task Force Web site at https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/.

The Indiana Sustainable Student was produced under the auspices of the Sustainability Task Force by IU Bloomington senior Kevin Pozzi, who designed and compiled the guide during his participation in the 2008 Summer Program in Sustainability. Pozzi led a summer-long collaboration between the Sustainability Task Force, the Office of Orientation Programs and Residential Programs & Services in an effort to create a visually appealing and informative resource for IU students.

"Since the concept of sustainability covers a wide range of issues, it can be difficult to know where to turn when choosing to live a more sustainable lifestyle -- especially after leaving home for the first time," Pozzi said. "My goal this summer was to make it as easy as possible for students to live more sustainably on campus, and just as importantly, to take this knowledge with them when they graduate from IU."

In addition to providing concrete tips for sustainable living, the Indiana Sustainable Student points students to a variety of resources in the campus and the community and provides information about sustainability-oriented student organizations in order to encourage active student involvement.

"My interest in sustainability stems from a desire to live in a way that will leave a more positive impact on the environment than generations before us," Pozzi explained. "It is my hope that the Indiana Sustainable Student will encourage others to feel the same way."

Pozzi was one of 18 graduate and undergraduate student interns taking part in the 2008 Summer Program in Sustainability. For more information on the students and their work, see https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain/sustainabilityiu/summerfellows08/.
